UPSC NDA NA (2) Syllabus Paper 1 and Paper 2 2017-18

Here we provide UPSC NDA & NA full syllabus (updated) for the students.


Paper I        MATHEMATICS

1. Algebra

(set theory, Cartesian product, relation and function, Representation of real numbers on a line. Complex numbers, Binary system of numbers. Arithmetic, Geometric and Harmonic progressions. Quadratic equations with real coefficients. Solution of linear inequations of two variables by graphs.

Permutation and Combination. Binomial theorem and its application. Logarithms and their applications).

2.Matrices and Determinants

(Applications Solution of a system of linear equations in two or three unknowns by Cramers rule and by Matrix Method).


3.Trigonometric functions

(Multiple and Sub-multiple angles, Inverse trigonometric functions. Applications Height and distance, properties of triangles).


4.Analytical geometry 2D & 3D

(Rectangular Cartesian Coordinate system, Equation of a line in various forms, Angle between two lines, Equation of a circle in standard and in general form. Standard forms of parabola, ellipse and hyperbola, Distance formula, Point in a three dimensional space, distance between two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios, Equation of a plane, Angle between two lines and two planes, Equation of a sphere).


5.Differential Calculus

Concept of a real valued function domain, range and graph of a function. (Composite functions. inverse functions. Limits, Continuity of functions, Derivative of a function at a point, geometrical and physical interpreatation of a derivative applications. derivative of a function with respect of another function, Derivatives of sum, product and quotient of functions,  derivative of a composite function. maxima and minima. higher order derivatives. Increasing and decreasing functions.).


6. Integral Calculus and Differential equations

Integration as inverse of differentiation, (standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, integration by substitution and by parts, exponential and hyperbolic functions. Determination of areas of plane regions bounded by curves applications, Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation. General and particular solution of a differential equation, solution of first order and degree differential equations of different types.


7. Vector Algebra

(Vectors in 2D & 3D, magnitude and direction of a vector. Addition of vectors & scalar. Vector product and cross product of two vectors, multiplication of vector, scalar product or dot product of two-vectors.  Applications- In geometrical problems and work done by a force and moment of a force).


8.Statistics and Probability

(Statistics Classification of data, Frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution examples Graphical representation. Variance and standard deviation determination and comparison. Measures of Central tendency mean, median and mode.  Correlation and regression.

Probability Random experiment, outcomes and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events. Definition of

probability classical and statistical. Elementary theorems on probability. Conditional probability,

Bayes theorem. and Binomial distribution).

Part A     ENGLISH

The syllabus covers different aspects like Grammar and its usage, Question based on comprehension and cohesion in extended text to test the candidates proficiency in English language.



The question paper on GK will based on the subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Current affairs General Science, and Social Studies.

Conductors and Non-conductors, Static and Current Electricity,  Ohms Law, Simple Electrical Circuits, Heating, Lighting and Magnetic

Effects of Current, Primary and Secondary Cells, Use of X-Rays, Measurement of Electrical Power.

General Principles in the working of  Simple Pendulum, Simple Pulleys,  Gramophone, Telegraphs, Telephone,  Hydrometer, Microscope, Pressure Cooker, Thermos Flask, Periscope, Telescope, Siphon, Levers, Balloon, Pumps, Mariners Compass; Lightening Conductors, Fuses, etc..).


Section B


Physical and Chemical changes. Mixtures and Compounds, Elements,   Formulae, Symbols, and Chemical Equations, Law of

Chemical Combination. Air and Waters Properties.

Oxidation and Reduction, Preparation and Properties of Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbondioxide.

Acids, bases and salts.

Carbon different forms.

Fertilizers Natural and Artificial

Material used in the preparation of substances like soap, Safety Matches, Ink, Paper, Cement, and Gun-Powder, etc


Section C

(General Science)

Basis of Life Cells,Difference between the living and non- living things.

Tissues and Protoplasms.

Growth and Reproduction in Animals and Plants.

Elementary knowledge of human Body and its organs. Food Source of Energy for man.

Common Epidemics, their causes and prevention.

Balanced Diet.

The Solar System Meteors and Comets, Eclipses, etc

Freedom Movement in India. study about Indian History, Culture and Civilisation.

study of Indian Constitution and Administration.

Five Years Plans of India. Co-operatives and Community Development Panchayati Raj.

Section E (Geography)

Atmosphere and its composition, cyclones and Anti-cyclones; Humidity;

Condensation and Precipitation; Types of Climate. location and distribution of agricultural and industrial activities.

Regional Geography of India Climate, Natural vegetation. Mineral and Power resources;

Important sea ports and main sea, land and air ways of India. Imports and Exports of India.


Section F (Current Events)

Current important world events. Important events of india that have happened in the recent years. Prominent personalities  those connected with cultural activities and sports of the world.
